Willow Fencing Kits Q&A

A few common questions about our woven willow fencing answered. Or you can just call us with any queries!

How long does it take to build a willow fence?

There are a lot of variables such as the height, ground conditions and ability of the installer. However as a very rough guide two people with no experience should be able to install a simple fence of around 15m sq in a day. For example a fence 1.25 meters tall and 12 meters long. Someone with fencing experience is likely to be able to do this on their own.

How long does delivery take?

Our standard delivery lead time is 3-4 weeks and costs £65.00. Our express service is 7 working days and costs £155.00 (due to the lengths of Willow we are charged for a triple pallet)

How do you deliver?

We have a number of means of delivery depending on the size of the order, location and urgency. Shipping large heavy around the Uk is a challenge and we subsidise a majority of deliveries.

Most orders are sent out via one of our regular couriers, these are self employed drivers who we work closely with on a regular basis. Can I fix my fence to a wall?

Yes you can, we can supply wall fixing brackets or base plates to attach your willow fence to the side or top of a wall. Just ensure it’s sound enough to take the weight and drilling

How long does willow fencing last?

In normal conditions we would expect the life our willow fence to be around 10 years. However steel posts will be standing firm for in excess of 30 years. When the willow has finally degraded it can be removed from the metal posts and fresh willow re woven around the original posts again. We can supply just the willow cut to length ready to weave for half the price of our full kit. So there are no posts to get in the ground, it’s just weaving.

How do I know what to order?

Just tell us the length and height of your fence (s) and we will work our the number of willow stems, interim and mid posts.

Do I need to concrete the posts in?

Only the connector posts (every 3 meters) the mid posts in between the connector posts are simply knocked in

Can you make gates in willow?

We can make gates, these have a steel frame, latch and hinges with a central willow panel. Gates come with steel posts and attach to the gates with the fixings we provide.

Do I need any specialist equipment?

Not too specialist. You will need a spirit level, secateurs to trim any wayward side shoots and a tubular post knocker like this one will make getting the mid posts in much easier.

Do the metal posts stand out in the fence?

The mid posts are not very noticeable and could be mistaken for timber once they are weathered which takes around 6 months. The connector posts are on show and form part of the aesthetics of the fence, they too should simply be left to weather to a natural brown. There is no maintenance required.

Why do we use willow fencing ?

Willow is fast growing, it produces long clear stems and is very flexible so ideal for weaving. It also responds very well to hard pruning (coppicing or pollarding ). We typically use two year old stems.

What type of willow do you use for fencing?

We use Osier or to use the botanical name Salix viminalis it has the perfect characteristics for making willow fencing and bounces back after harvesting. The new shoots emerging in the photos below take just 2 years to form 5 meter tall plants !

Do we offer an installation service?

Sorry we don’t. Our self built kits are for self installation or by a tradesperson. We are happy to recommend installers for you to work with directly.

Can you supply just the posts or willow?

Yes we can, please get in touch for prices.

How can you extend the life of your willow fence?

We recommend spraying your fence with linseed mixed with turpentine in a 50/50 ratio. Be careful it can damage lawns and plants. This is best done when your fence is most dry once or twice a year.

Is the fence the same both sides?

Yes, there is no “bad” side

What is the minimum order?

Our minimum order is 6 square metres
